Thomas Sansom (1818-1872)

Re the above someone presumably Thomas Clark or Thompson most likely , Has given the above collectors dates as 1843 and 1862 NOT a872 as per the data base.
Clark also says, " Thos Sansom, a.l.s. 1843 of Liverpool.
Before I make the change a second opinion please. http://static.herbariumathome.org/sheets/BIRM/13718.jpg

Thomas Sansom (1818 - 1872). Worked as a clerk in HM Customs. In the 1830's/40's he was resident in Islington, London - entry from records of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh (contributor) and confirmed by 1841 Census. The latter indicates he was born in Middlesex. In 1861, he was in Liverpool. In 1871, he was living at Swain Terrace, Newcastle on Tyne with his wife Isabella, and 5 children. He died in Newcastle in the first quarter of 1872, and his wife moved to Hampshire (as recorded in the 1881 census).

He was friends with Bean and Brent; they collected for a herbarium. He contributed significantly to Dickinson's Flora of Liverpool - which can be accessed at archive.org see http://www.archive.org/stream/floraofliverpool00dickuoft#page/n6/mode/1up/search/sansom
He was especially interested in mosses.

and contributed a number of papers to the Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society.

A.L.S in 1843 (Librarian?), and member of the Botanical Society of London
(1837 - 51),

and from The Phytologist Vol 1

sources D E Allen The Botanists, (and Desmond), and info from census returns.

A great piece of research, Chris L, thank you!

The note queried is in Thompson's hand. He has the ALS date right but date of death wrong. Ignore!
