An anastomosis (noun) is the re-convergence of a vessel, vein, hyphae etc so Ley's using it as a verb 'anastomosing' referring to the "lines" which are presumably veins...

Thanks, Never come across it before, it was in my dictionary but not as I thought Ley had spelt it.
