biography
Church of England clergyman, popular educationalist and botanist. He said of his election to the chair of botany at Cambridge "when appointed, I knew very little indeed about botany ... but I probably knew as much of the subject as any other resident in Cambridge". His field classes (assisted by Charles Cardale Babington who later succeeded him as professor of botany) were very popular and included the young Charles Darwin whom Henslow recommended as naturalist for the Beagle. Vicar of Hitcham, Suffolk. Father of George Henslow, popular botanical lecturer, and father-in-law of J.D.Hooker.
