Karl Heinrich Mertens (17/5/1796-18/9/1830)
Biography
Born May 1796, in Bremen, where his father Franz Carl Mertens was Professor of Botany.
Died September 1830 of typhoid, shortly after returning from an expedition to Iceland, at Kronstadt, St. Petersburg.
German medical doctor, botanist, who became Assistant at the Academy of St Petersburg. Explorer of Iceland, Arctic America & Russia.
Cape Mertens on the Chukotka Peninsula, Russia, was named for him.
