Isaac Brown was born at Amwellbury, a farm near Ware, Herts. While living in Hitchin he became a local secretary of the Botanical Society of London to which he submitted specimens. A Quaker who taught first at his own private school at Hitchin 1829-1845 (destroyed by fire in 1845 and today The Lord Lister Hotel occupies the site, Joseph Lister having been a pupil at the school), then at Dorking until 1848, after which he moved to Ackworth, Yorkshire. In 1870 he retired to Brantholme, Kendal.
Best known as an astronomer, but "in earlier life devoted considerable time to botanical research."
