Born 28 November 1806, son of Samuel Butler DD in Shropshire.
Attended Shrewsbury School.
1824 St John's Collage, Cambridge. Contemporary of Darwin of whom he wrote "He inoculated me with a taste for Botany which has stuck by me all my life".

Ordained deacon, 1829; priest, Hereford 1830.
Curate of Meole Brace, 1829-1834.
Assistant Master at Shrewsbury School, 1829-1834.
1831 Married at St Michael's, Bristol, to Fanny Worsley. Two sons, Samuel (1854) and Thomas (1855).
Rector of Langar with Barnston, Notts., 1834-1876.
Rural Dean of Bingham, 1855-1872.
Prebendary of Lincoln, 1868-1886.
Died 29 December 1886, at Shrewsbury.
