Biography

Specialist in Rubus and an expert bryologist.

Born 4th December 1836 (some sources say 1838) son of a Church of Ireland clergyman, Hillsborough, County Down.
Spent life as a country rector within 30 miles of his birthplace:
Derriaghy, Antrim;
Meigh and Ardmore, Armagh;
1886 and thereafter at Aghaderg, Loughbrickland, County Down, living at Aghaderg Glebe.

1865 married Louisa Catherine Tandy.
1871 ordained after having been educated at Trinity College, Dublin.
1878 joined the Belfast Field Club.
1883 led the first Irish fungus foray.
1896 encouraged and assisted Coslett Herbert Waddell in establishment of the Moss Exchange Club.
1901 discovered Rubus lettii.
1902 published Hepatics of the British Isles.
Died 26th December 1920 at Aghaderg.
