Biography

British civil servant employed by the Admiralty, and amateur botanist.
Born 24 January 1868, in Bristol. and attended Bristol Grammar School.
Moved to London at the age of 17 to be educated privately for the Civil Service.
1888-1928 accepted into Works Department of the Admiralty as an accountant where he remained until he retired.
1889 BA London University by private evening study.
Married at the age of 26 to Marian Clifford (1871-1961). Six sons:
Robert Geoffrey Pugsley (?)
Charles Clifford Pugsley (1897-1916)
Rupert William Pugsley (1899-1947)
Herbert Cecil Pugsley (1900-?)
Alfred Grenville Pugsley (1903-?)
Richard Adam Pugsley (1906-1911)

Received a house in Wimbledon as a wedding present in which he lived the rest of his life.

Died 18 November 1947.
Obituary in Watsonia 1, 124-129.

JSTOR contribution by Natural History Museum says: 'His specimens are often identified simply by the initials "H.W.P.", a convention he also applied to many co-collectors leading to considerable ambiguity.'
