Charles Edward Moss (1870-1930)
Born in Cheshire (7th February,1870). He father was a Evangelist / Minister (as described by census returns). Spent some time teaching in Somerset (Prospect House Bruton); he was also described as being an elementary school teacher in Halifax in the 1891 census return.
Later he was appointed to the Curatorship of the Herbarium in Cambridge (1907 - 16). He married; his wife was called Alice, and they had a daughter Beatrice. He accepted the post of Professor of Botany at the University of Witwatersrand, S Africa.
He was the only member of staff for the first few years, and the department was housed in a corrugated iron building - the same building housed the Department of Zoology, Geology and Applied Mathematics. He studied the flora of Natal. http://web.wits.ac.za/Academic/Science/APES/About.htm
