Born Kirkby Overblow, near Sicklinghall, south of Harrogate, Yorkshire, fater William was a master boot-maker, but the family soon moved to Saddleworth, Yorkshire, where Walter attended Boarshurst School, and assisted in his father’s business.
Graduated from the Royal College of Science at London University.
Taught at a series of schools:
1901-1902 Larne Grammar School.
1901 Poulton-le-Fylde Grammar School.
1903-1907 Sexey’s School at Bruton in Somerset (botany master).
1908-1939 Taunton School (senior science-master).
1908 Joined Moss Exchange Club.
1922 DSc from the Royal College of Science at London University.
Bryophytes collection at the London Natural History Museum, lichens at Kew, and other plants at the county Museum in Taunton.
