N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

Since there are 4 sites in Surrey called White Hill, this sheet and others the same month can't be localised eg http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/364072/

Mennell was a long-standing member of Croydon Microscopical and Natural History Club (Croydon Natural History and Scientific Society after 1901), and president 1885-1886. WH Beeby, also a member, puts Cephalanthera longifolia (grandiflora) in the club record of plants growing in the Croydon area. Further, there is a reference in the Club Proceedings to an outing, 17th May 1879, when "The party proceeded by rail to Caterham, thence walking to White Hill, and through the War Coppice ... the party descended the hill into Godstone". This gives an idea of where the members referred to as 'White Hill', being at OS TQ3253. It is not the 'Box Hill White Hill'.

This plant is not Cephalanthera longifolia but C. damasonium (as named by Mennell - synonyms C. pallens and C. grandiflora).

There are two other plants (Neottia nidus-avis and Viburnum opulus) collected by Mennell in June 1887 at 'White Hill' which has been interpreted as at TQ15 near Box Hill.
