J Burgess collected around 1860 in the York area, associated with A R Horwood. As there are two John Burgesses also on the pick-list, it would be good to know his full name and some biographical info. Perhaps a Bootham School connection?

The suggestion of Bootham School is good: note the Quaker representation of the date. There is no mention of Burgess in J G Baker's 'Yorkshire' (1864).

The "association" with Horwood is curious. Horwood (b. 1864) worked at Leicester Museum, then Kew and was primarily a bryologist and lichenologist and part of a Leicester nexus of bryologists including Sowter, A E Wade and Fr Henry Reader O.P.

Distinguish James John Burgess (1863-1934) who wrote the Flora of Moray (1935); and

Rev Dr John Burgess (or Burges) (1725-95) a Presbyterian minister in Scotland.
