Having studied a number of J Woods, ex herb. F Townsend spmns I believe the "W" Woods monogram was added by Townsend.

No, this suggestion certainly hadn't occurred to me. On these labels, the pencil notes are I'd say in Townsend's 'curly' script; the ink script occurs on numerous early sheets and may be Townsend's or someone else's? The familiar J Woods monogram always seems peculiar in resembling a 'W' - the idea of Townsend writing it is intriguing and would add to what we 'sort-of' know. Many A O Hume labels appear to have been written by Griffin; but Townsend may also have written many of them as well as annotating in pencil; and may have added the serial numbers
