N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

The initials are (I think) ESG : Mrs Eliza Standerwick Gregory, who was an expert of the genus Viola.
see the H@H wiki http://herbariaunited.org/wiki/Eliza_Standerwick_Gregory_n%C3%A9e_BARNES

Thanks to you both.
I could never even think of such an odd place name, or one could exist.

And thanks to Chris Liffen for drawing my attention to my mistake and to ESG's expertise on Viola.
Have you now got access to the OS maps, Chris (Hallucigenia)? It does help with these difficult names.
In this case I did a specimen search for Ley on 19/6/1885 (I put the same date in both 'from' and 'to' boxes) and then looked at the map (which you can't do if you still can't access them!) I do remember having seen this name before though!

Several sheets at H@H were associated with ESS rather than ESG - because the G is remarkably "S like".
Best

Sally
many thanks for your comments, yes I can get OS maps but they are not stable i.e. though I can zoom in and out they tend to g from very large to small or vice versa with nothing in between, but d you not need a place name to search for a map first?
I do use Multi Map and swap to OS which allows me to drag the map to and fro.
I think as I have no interest in word games of any sort, this does not help.
