"Near Thirsk" was a later(?) addition. Not convinced he means this "Newby", the only one I can find near Thirsk but has no sign of or record of an area of Carr there. Any one know of a better one?....

In his magnificent 'North Yorkshire' (1863) J G Baker refers to Newby Wiske carr and to Oenanthe phellandrium growing there. The carr, he says, is like one of the Cambridgeshire or Huntingdonshire fens upon a small scale and is one of the best stations for hygrophilous plants in North Yorkshire.
