Hassall Hall is at SJ 770 573 GB from http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm

To answer your question:
I delete all but 4 digits from each of the x and y groups. Then take the first figure of each group and enter a slash.

eg x(abcdooooo) y(efghooooo) > abcd efgh > ae/bcd fgh

In this form the input box will convert it to a two letter hectad plus a 6-figure grid ref,which you can then reduce as required. I don't know an easier way. But like Mike I try to use getamap if at all possible.
