Perth Museum data uploaded
by HerbariaUnited on Friday 1st December 2006

13000 herbarium specimens from Perth Museum herbarium have been added to the herbariaUnited database. This hugely improves our coverage of Perthshire and I'm very grateful to Mark Simmons for making this high quality data set available to us.

Herbaria@home documentation project
by Tom Humphrey on Wednesday 7th June 2006

Manchester Museum is piloting a web-based online project to document herbarium specimens. Images of undocumented specimens have been posted online along with a simple database form.

Herbaria@home aims to widen access to the collection while also increasing the rate at which the collection can be documented (by involving potentially thousands of volunteers).

If the pilot is a success then we envisage that other institutions might participate and we hope that herbaria@home could ultimately make a major contribution to herbarium documentation, by involving large numbers of people who would be interested to work on specimens but who currently have no feasible direct access to museum collections.

The pilot project (with ~2000 sheets online) aims to test feasibility and to gather feedback. Please have a look at Herbaria@home and let us know what you think.
