From Townsend F. (1904) Flora of Hampshire incl. the Isle of Wight.
"P. semipinnata, Roth - 1st record Bromfield in Phyt., 1848. Wild in rocky places, probably introduced in Wight. IV. (N. Wight) (3) Carisbrooke Castle, a single tree, of considerable age, within the walls (1879). I understand that Prof. Babington considers this to be the same as the Arran plant. It accords perfectly with specimens in my Herb. from St Maurice, Switzerland.
There are specimens from West End Coppice or Carisbrooke Castle in the Br. Mus. Herb., communicated by Mr Stratton."
From the annotated copy of Townsend (1884) of Rev J.E. Kelsall (many of whose earlier records are in the 1904 Edn) under P. semipinnata, he writes quoting a letter from F. Stratton Sept (19)07. "I believe there is no doubt the white beam trees at Carisbrooke were planted by a former custodian, Mr Dennett". Kelsall also comments "Linn. writing to Miller, says he crossed these two (P. aria and P. aucuparia - marked in text) successfully."
