Herbarium specimen: Viola rupestris

Taxon:Violaceae: Viola rupestris F.W. Schmidt ("Teesdale Violet")
det. M J Harvey 12/4/1961
Other name:Violaceae: Viola riviniana var. minor

The stipules are not broad enough for V rupestris. Even if they were I am not prepared to accept a glabrous form and certainly not a "sub-glabrous" one. I should name it V riviniana of course. Material is poor and needs later foliage.

Collected by:Dr Richard Charles L'Estrange Burges
Locality:Great Britain, VC66 County Durham, Cauldron Snout, NY82, Bare sugar limestone bank, Cauldron Snout end of Widdybank Fell
Institution:University of Birmingham (BIRM)
Image:Viola rupestris herbarium specimen from Cauldron Snout, VC66 County Durham by Dr Richard Charles L'Estrange Burges.
fruits/flowers:mature flowers
notes:The shape of the flower appeared more rounded than V riviniana. Some plants on bare limestone were fairly convincing- many not flowering. Blue flowers, hairy capsules. Those on the adjunct turf appeared to be nearer to V. riv f minor
Filing note:Violaceae

Inferred details are marked.
