notes: | Folded letter appended: "The Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew presents his compliments to Mr Atkins, and begs to acknowledge receipt of the abnormal Ophrys muscifera. Monstrosities in this genus, such as flowers with united sepals, petals united with anthers, double and treble lips and anthers, are fairly common. Cases are cited in Penzig's Pflanzen Teratologie and Master's Vegetable Teratology. In the latter work (p. 386) mention is made of a trilobed lip in O. aranifera. It is of special interest that the specimen you forwarded is the only record, that so far has been traced, of this abnormality in the species O. muscifera. 21st May 1923. Mr H. Atkins, High Street, Arundel, Sussex. |
