Contents |
George Stephen West (20/4/1876-7/8/1919) was born In Bradford. He was the younger son of William West (1848 – 1914) and was educated at the Bradford Technical College, the Royal College of Science London and St John’s College, Cambridge. He first lectured at the Royal Agricultural College, then he took up an appointment at Birmingham University (1906), later becoming Professor there – after Hillhouse. He enlarged and improved the department, especially the herbarium. He was an expert on freshwater algae, like his father. They worked together over a period of some years, see entry for William West (1848 – 1914). He died in 1919 from double pneumonia; it seems he never quite recovered from a severe bout of influenza some 4 years earlier.
See Obituary in Journal of Botany, (1919) 57 283-284.
