Biography
John Bland Wood physician, botanist and in particular bryologist, was born in the area of Pontefract, Yorkshire on 3rd December 1813, son of James Wood and Mary Bland.
Educated in Pontefract, after which he followed medical training in Dublin, Edinburgh, London, and Heidelberg. Graduated as MD 1836.
1859 Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons.
Married Elizabeth Jackson, in Manchester 1836.
Wrote Flora of Mancuniensis, published in 1840.
Living with his wife and five children at Camp Street, Boughton from 1851.
Second marriage 1873 to Elizabeth Mercy Carter (1831-1891).
Ceased medical practice owing to poor health 1875.
Died at his home of two years' standing in Swinbourne Grove, Withington, Manchester 11th February 1890.
