Congregationalist, botanist, president Warrington Natural History Society. Published Bryologia Britannica with W.J.Hooker; classified American and Indian mosses. Encouraged artisan botanists in Lancashire and Yorkshire. He preferred solitude to society, suffered from indigestion and died of bronchitis.
