Desmond's Botanists etc lists an entry for a William Gardiner (1808-1852) - born and died in Dundee. An umbrella maker who made a number of contributions eg. Botanical rambles in Braemar; he was very interested in mosses; wrote 'Twenty lessons on British Mosses'

and was a member of The Botanical Society of London. It seems that his father (William, born 1789) botanised with George Don (Nurseryman and Market Gardener).
