Cotton operative. Bryologist. Discovered Chara braunii. First President Manchester Cryptogamic Soc. Oldham Microscopical Club and Field Society. Eventually incapacitated with rheumatism in his knee.

Born Dukinfleld, Cheshire, 1833.
Died Oldham, 6 May, 1896.
