Biography

Lt-Col. Richard Barker Ullman, OBE, MC.

Born 24 Sept 1894, son of Percy David Ullman and Hilda Jessie née Barker.
He had two bothers Peter Alfred and Jeffrey Percy Craig.
His grandfather David Ullmann, a German Jewish merchant, was born in Baden Heidelberg and came to England in 1838. At some point the family anglicised their name by dropping the final 'n'. His father Percy was a stockbroker who enjoyed to relax in Cornwall to escape the city life of London. Percy's sister, Cecily Wilhelmina, was a prolific writer and married fellow writer, solicitor, and philosopher, Alfred Sidgwick. The Sidgwicks also enjoyed the relaxation provided by Cornwall and eventually settled there, in the artistic community at Lamorna.

1907-1913 attended Winchester College where he met Patrick Martin Hall and they wrote an article for the Winchester College Natural History Society. While at school his home address was Palace Court, Court Road, Kingston-on-Thames
1914 - 1920 Royal Field Artillery Second Lieutenant/Acting Captain.
1924 elected Associate Member of the Institute of Brewing while working as an Under Brewer at Messrs. Taylor Walker & Co. Ltd. Limehouse, London E14. During the early years of his employment his address was at the brewery.
1939 continued military career as Local Defence Adviser.
1943 recorded as member of the Botanical Society and Exchange Club of the British Isles and living at Trove, New Road, Esher, Surrey.
Died 1953.
