Born at Sheffield on 20 January 1819.
Trinity College, Cambridge, BA 1842, MA 1845.
Attended lectures by JS Henslow, and was a friend of Charles Cardale Babington and Frederick Townsend.
Ordained deacon in 1844 and priest in 1845, became curate of Bluntisham, Huntingdonshire.
1848 curate of Comberton, Cambridgeshire.
18 October 1855 Married Mary Louisa Kendall, niece of the rector of Comberton, Rev. James Fendall, who survived him.
About 1860 moved to Turnham Green, London, and later Albany Street, Regent's Park, devoting his time to botany.
After temporary duty at Honington, Warwickshire, moved to Kew Green 1879, where, for the rest of his life, he took part in services at Kew and Petersham churches.
Died at Kew, 16 April 1886, and buried in Fulham cemetery.
