http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/207831/ refers to a MANCH specimen collected at Cheddar, North Somerset VC6, in 1893 by "T. Axon".

The locality of the plant and the assonance of the collector's name with Axford, Mary, initially made me wonder if Axon, T., was a member of the extended family of Thomas Clark and H. S. Thompson. However, the specimen is ex herb Charles Bailey and Bailey was a Congregationalist deacon not a Quaker.

It is clearly to be inferred from the label that Bailey was not himself the collector but no other specimen presently documented on H@H suggests who the collector may have been (though J. W. White was collecting at Cheddar a week earlier). Unfortunately the BEC Report for 1893 is not available online.

The word "taxon", a back-formation from 'taxonomy', was coined in the mid-twentieth century (1946).

It is likely that attributing the collection of this specimen to "T. Axon" was a goak.
