Specimen #353727

Taxon:Primulaceae: Primula elatior (L.) Hill ("Oxlip")
Filed in taxon folder:Primulaceae: Primula elatior (L.) Hill ("Oxlip")
Collected by:James Henry Augustus Steuart
Collection date:3/1889
Locality:Great Britain, Stony Stratford
communicated:National Museum of Wales
exchanged:Watson Botanical Exchange Club
Institution:South London Botanical Institute (SLBI)
Image:Primula elatior herbarium specimen from Stony Stratford in 1889 by James Henry Augustus Steuart.
notes:The anomaly of Stony Stratford being quoted as being in Essex has been previously reported, see the Watson Botanical Exchange Club Report 1926-27 page 386. HS Thompson suggests a transcriptional error by JA Wheldon, and that the true collection site might have been Great Sampford.

Documented by xmhcman following initial work by oldnick on 12th January 2013.

N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

Stony Stratford is at Milton Keynes, and I can't think of any similar name in Essex. Steuart's other specimens that year give no clue, nor indeed any from the relevant counties. The early date of the flowers may match the species, I'm not so sure about the leaves.

The only Stratford I can find in Essex is the one NW of West Ham.

Strikes me this may be a garden hybrid or similar, as well as a confusing location

Such an anomaly has been previously reported, see the Watson Botanical Exchange Club Report 1926-27 [pdf] page 386. HS Thompson suggests a transcriptional error by JA Wheldon, and that the true collection site might have been Great Sampford.
