Collector from style of handwriting. Like many C19 writers Bromfield writes the figure 8 without joining the two loops as we would today, but instead of rendering something like S he manages the reverse - Ƨ [hope this editor will cope!], sometimes with added flourishes. Just a mannerism or was he left handed?
