What is now called Clinopodium (formerly Calamintha) menthifolium (the rare one from Apesdown, IoW) was then called C. sylvatica.

What is now C. ascendans was then C. menthifolium - with two varieties - var. genuina and var. Briggsii.

Sowerby's English Botany 3 ed. (ed. Syme) refers. See also the remarks in Journal of Botany at http://www.mocavo.co.uk/Journal-of-Botany-British-and-Foreign-Volume-51/592131/313

This specimen is C. ascendans.
