Some specimens of Joseph Woods are inscribed "Mr Dunlop's". Woods frquently collected from Borrer's garden at Barrow Hill, 2km SE of Henfield. William Borrer built Red Oaks just south of Henfield church (OS TQ211159) as a wedding present for his daughter Fanny who married Rev. Charles Dunlop (married 1838; died 1851), curate, later vicar, of Henfield. The house took its name from the American red oaks which Borrer planted in the grounds. Dunlop's son Charles Seward Dunlop was also vicar, 1887-1890. Red Oaks can be seen here on a Map of Henfield together with a village history.
I am not sure if Dunlop ever collected specimens but his garden would have been familiar to Borrer's botanising friends such as Woods. |
