George Johnston lived 1797-1855. Kent & Allen says his herbarium was at Berwick and consisted of specimens from VCs 67, 68, & 81 (South & North Northumberland, and Berwickshire). His herbarium sheets often have the Berwick herbarium stamp, and printed labels that resemble those used in the late C19 suggesting relabeling after his death.

Not to be confused with Henry Halcro Johnston 1856-1939 who used a distincitive herbrium stamp and labels.

Born in Simprim. Urged by friends and colleagues to apply for Chair of Nat Hist at Edinburgh - declined , describing himself as a "little naturalist". Worked on sponges and other marine creatures.
