As has been previously suggested, the different handwriting may be Townsend's eg see http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/325688/ which has both Woods and apparently Townsend labels. But Townsend wasn't born until 1822, 4 years earlier. Noticeably, Townsend's biography page has no handwriting samples
