Rubber stamped: "HERB. BACKHOUSE, PURCHASED 1908." - the consensus appears to be that this is 'Mr James Backhouse jnr'.

I now find via JSTOR that it was the herbarium of James Backhouse jnr (1825-1890) which was purchesed in 1908 by Edinburgh University, although incorporated within it was his father's collection. William Backhouse (1779-1844) was a cousin of the father (1794-1869).

William Backhouse's herbarium, while on loan to J G Baker, was destroyed in the 1864 fire at Thirsk.
