N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

It looks as though the curating at BIRM is in error for this date. One of DMH's sheets from 27/9/1248 is from Kidlington [Sturdy Castle] - on the way to Weston-in-the-Green where there are Peat Pits. I can't find any reference on DMH's own labels to suggest that he was collecting at Little Compton that day. He writes Weston Peat Pits - and there is a SSSI at Weston Fen whose citation mention the Peat Pits http://www.sssi.naturalengland.org.uk/citation/citation_photo/1001158.pdf

If DMH was living at Little Compton on 27/9/1948, and he collected the h@h specimens of that date from Weston Peat Pits/Sturdy Castle ~25km ESE, and from Wootton Wawen 25km NNW, he must surely have had a car!

There is a hamlet of Weston 4km north of Little Compton, but no signs of peat pits on the map.

Surely not unlikely [my Dad had a motor bike [with sidecar] before the war!
Although he lived at Little Compton, there is no mention of it on any of the sheets for that day - and we know he went to Sturdy's Castle [about 5 miles away] on the same day from http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/295477/ . The fact that he also collected a number of sheets at Weston Peat Pits without further explanation of location suggests [to me] that it was a better known place than the Little Compton hamlet. There are references to Weston-on-the-Green Peat Pits in the botanical literature as far back as 1839. I suggest we refer this to Tom for a decision as we would be over-riding the BIRM curation. Shall I do it?
