N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

Hi Keith,

do you mean the capitalization of 'Bills wood'? In this case, because the locality is in the place name dictionary, your correction to the capitalization would not register (as otherwise the two entries are identical).

Whenever a 'new' place name is entered, the system tries to match it against localities which have already been encountered (firstly matching against places that appear on the drop down list, then against any other known localities in the system).

This matching ignores the capitalization of the entries, so as to avoids a proliferation of entries that differ only in how they are formatted. This is generally the correct behaviour for most cases, but does cause problems in cases where a change was intentional.

The way localities are stored internally is intended to reuse place names as much as possible. The specimen record holds a reference to a placename entry ('Shirley, Bills wood') which can be shared between any other specimens from that locality. This has the advantage that related records can easily be associated and allows for more efficient searching.

I've corrected the capitalization by editing the database (something that I plan to provide a user-interface for, so that you could make the change yourself in the future). I've also added the Grid Reference, as looking up 'Bills Wood' it became clear that the grid reference used OS map sheet 'SP'.

regards,

Tom
