WM is William A Mudd (not a Rev.) lichenologist and curator Cambridge Botanic Garden, author of Handbook of British Lichens (1861). He came from Great Ayton, Cleveland vc62, (home of the adolescent Capt. James Cook) and most of his records are from that area or south Co Durham.
