N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

Can anyone help on the location, please? I can get no joy from google. There are Buttermilk Castles in both Wexford and Waterford but, even if they had woods, I doubt that G.boreale would grow in them. Its distribution in both Ireland and GB is northern and western.

It's not Galium boreale (lvs not 3 veined; too many lvs per whorl).

The fruits look like those of G. odoratum (Heath's determination).

Chris and David,

Many thanks to you both(again). Had not spotted that there was a discrepancy between the identification on the sheet (Galium odoratum) and that presented on the system (G.boreale). It certainly looks more like G.odoratum on proper examination and ishall enter it as such. On location, I shall put in the Buttermilk Wood as a possibility but it does not really fit what Heath says: "wood near Buttermilk Woodlands". I could get no joy from the OS search facility for Buttermilk Woodlands but did not think, as Chris did, of shortening the entry.

There is one other sheet for October 1941 for somewhere in Staffordshire (again the details are a bit vague); for some information about D M Heath see :

For what it's worth, I have been trying to localise another site of Heath's from this time, Wheelbarrow Castle, which crops up on 2 sheets, see
