Google mapping of specimens - is it too slow?

I've added a google map display to the specimen search pages. To view this click on the 'Maps and Reports' tab at the top of the search results page (which the page has finished loading)

e.g. Impatiens glandulifera

From the map view click on the markers to get info about individual specimens. Only specimens with grid-references are shown.

I'm concerned that this may have slowed down page loading too much. If the map loading causes problems then I'll try a different approach. Please let me know if I should rethink this...
