I think the date is 17 June 1876 (which also fits the style of handwriting of various other Hillhouse sheets from that year, e.g. http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/280334/ ). This is incompatible with Rev William Smith (1808-1857), but the name is sufficiently common that there could easily be other William Smiths. (there are no other William Smith sheets in the database so far)

Yep could well be... The only other Botanical W Smiths can find so far are a described as a garner so presumably not a Rev and 1795-1882 so in his 80s by then, or some younger botanical artists WH 1835-85 and WG 1835-1917.... and noted. Amended date. Mike d'A.

reads to me as 'var Wm-Smith' rather than a collector name
