N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

"N(orth) of Spool"? Is that North of Liverpool, Blackpool or possibly Southport?? Any ideas?

It says "L'pool ..... coll J Harbord Lewis"
You could search 'Specimens' to see if and where he collected other specimens that day.

Ballast is used in ships see Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailing_ballast#Uses
"On cargo vessels water ballast is added to the ballast tanks when empty to increase propeller immersion, to improve steering, and to control trim and draft."

So as L'pool is a port, it needn't be anything to do with the railway - though it could be! Smile

As North of where there are several railway tracks reckoned "track ballast" a better bet as seems a long way to cart ships ballast out from the docks..unless had to to get rid without blocking up the channels..possibly....??? Mike d'A
