1. What does V E mean?
2. Lvs look a bit sharply serrated for arvensis?

I found recently several specimens where L D Pitt had put V E on his determinations, and Wonastow put one on the message board too. It seemed they could only amount to confirmation of the label. But no sugggestions of whst it means - verum est?? Wonastow could only find Voluntary Euthanasia in his dictionary. On some, it looks like vg which doesn't help. See what you mean about the leaf-shape - have you been Polanding?

1. Tried Stearn:
"verisim" = "probably", which sounds plausible.

2. As I was always told you couldn't do mints without flowers, I never thought of Poland. His key suggests there might be some spicata in it so perhaps
M. x gracilis?

I'm now suspecting V E could mean (agreed but) 'variety excepted'. L D P has done a lot of determinations of Ley's sheets of this sp (Ley has usually specified a variety), at the same date; he seems to put 'agreed' on some and 'VE' on others. And the date wasn't 1945.
