N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

While browsing initials.... The WM could be W Mudd:- There are no records on H@H for him after 1862 (& all before from NE) yet he dies in 1879: The entry in the 1931 Biographical Index lists him: " Mudd, William (1830-79): b. Bedale, Yorks, 1830; d. Cambridge, Apr. 1879. A.L.S. 1868. Gardener at Great Ayton, Cumb. Curator, Cambridge Bot. Gard. ' Manual of Brit. Lichens,' 1861.... etc etc". Though the writing also looks abit like WM's when in the NE e.g. http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/301921/?image there are also better matches to other H&B specimens collected after WM had died ...... So while a bit thin, he was still Botanising, as curator presumably seeing specimens and in the right place... if it was collected while he was there but as no date ???

A fascinating story. I looked through the Cambs H@H specimens 1864 - 1879 but found nothing else that I could relate to Mudd.
