That was interesting! I read it as E. Chawner. Having first discovered that Rupert Brooke's middle name was Chawner, I then found that a book published in 1850, written by Fanny Parks, had an introduction and notes by one Esther Chawner. http://chnm.gmu.edu/wwh/modules/lesson5/lesson5.php?s=5 Sounds promising?
Unfortunately both Desmond and dictionary of world Biography have the pages missing - don't they always!
Also there is an Eloisa Chawner born England 1795 died 1867 buried in the English cemetery in Florence. She would do as well! Sounds an interesting family!
