Harriet Sewell, 1842 - 1915, was a pupil at the School instituted by J S Henslow at Hitcham, in the face of hostility of local farmers. He successfully taught botany on scientific principles and aimed to turn out pupils who could venture into employment other than as agricultural labourers. Harriett became a pupil teacher from 1857; awarded a Queen's scholarship 1861; awarded a herbarium cabinet by Henslow's daughter for outstanding achievement in botany; later a governess to the Bryce family and travelled abroad in Italy and Australia. Her parents were Edward (a thatcher) and Mary Sewell. In the 1881 Census she is recorded as a Superintendent of a Home, in Battersea; and by 1901 was Superintendent of Royal Homes for Ladies, living at 46 Wandsworth Common.
