Re collector as 1842 how about George Gardiner rather than W Gardiner (unless not the 1866-1928 one), as George returned in 1841 from Brazil, by when seemingly a prolific collector, and before departing for Ceylon in 1843 ... see http://www.electricscotland.com/history/other/gardner_george.htm If living near the Andersonian university while preparing his lectures in 1842 then that puts him in or near Glasgow...

This style of mounted specimen & label on brown card is uniform & presumably intended for an exhibition? eg see the Salix specimens from Richmond of [James] Ward. But there are no other such by 'Gardiner' currently on H@H.
