Like you, have seen many such labels and assume that he was in the habit of receiving specimens from various friends / parishioners etc.
eg some of his many 'correspondents for the The flora of Derbyshire

As a friend of James Britten of BM(NH) he was well placed to acquire specimens. There is an informative biography on this site.
