N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

I find this almost unreadable could this possible be Gatcombe North Somerset Hidcomber Head.

There's a Gatcombe at
OS Grid reference ST8799
(W.Glos) which fits with a sheet of his from Minchinhamptom on the same day. I don't know why it doesn't come up on any of the searches, though! Nor can I find anything resembling the first word of the location.

Thanks again it's jolly awkward not having access to O/S.

You might persuade yourself that the first part reads
Milcombe Head, (Gatcombe)
which is mentioned here

Clearly you are right. And Milcombe a corruption of Milkmaid/Milking Mead - or the other way around?

No, the scientific mind at work!

But I am concerned about the OS gazetteer's accuracy - this is not the first time their results change from visit to visit. I can't recall the details but, say, "Milc"/"Mil" input bring up diverging results sometimes!

I only come to the OS bits and pieces once I have some sort of 'clue / hint' from other sources.

Does anyone agree / violently disagree, that Streetmap is far easier to use and good results, only rarely doesn't find a place that OS doesn't .....
