W H Painter has abundant specimens from the 1880s, collected at Knowle, Somerset; quite sensibly these have been edited as at Knowle near Bridgwater, ST335395. But there is another Knowle in Somerset, in the (modern?) suburbs of Bristol, at ST605705; and very significantly,
http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/239802/ is very clearly labelled as from Knowle, Bristol. http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/262879/ is from Upper Knowle, which is in the same Bristol suburb at http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/262879/. We can discount Knowle Shropshire, which is very distant from Stirchley where Painter lived at one time. http://herbariaunited.org/specimen/270203/ was cultivated at Knowle, which suggests habitation!
Did Painter live in Bristol at one time, and should his Knowle specimens be re-edited accordingly? NB he has many specimens from Bristol generally, though also from N Somerset & W Glos in general! |

Did you look at the wiki biography? "The 1881 census records him living in Bedminster, Somerset." |

Thanks for that! (Bedminster pronounced Bemster being in 'Bristle'). Painter has specimens from all over the adjoining counties, and so thinking about it, He may have written 'Knowle Somerset' to distinguish from 'Knowle Bristol' just as equally as both referring to the same place. |
